About Us

The UM FLAT is a sustainable living residence offering undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Montana and Missoula College the opportunity to lessen their carbon footprint during their studies here in the beautiful Missoula Valley.  No prior sustainability experience is necessary to apply, only a desire to live more within our means.

Mission Statement

The UM FLAT is a cooperative student residency that empowers members of the Missoula community to lead ecologically responsible lifestyles. We demonstrate alternative ways of living informed by the urgency of combating systemic oppression. We provide a welcoming public gathering space where FLATmates and visitors can build meaningful relationships and work together towards a sustainable and equitable future.

The Living and Learning Experience

We endeavor for this blog–as another format of our forum–to be a place of storytelling for our FLAT community. Here we’ll share updates on projects, stories, and relevant resources as we continue experimenting and exploring with alternative ways of living. Please keep in touch, and ask questions as we go along!

In 2023, we’re stoked for an exciting year ahead. Stay tuned for announcements and reflections on the following:tom

  • Work days
  • Ongoing projects
  • Internship-led workshop series
  • Harvest Party
  • Wild Mercy

Current Residents

The FLAT houses six residents each year. Check out the current (and past) residents here to see where they come from, and what they’re up to!
