Tony Reed, a UM student working with the FLAT this semester is interested in working on a demonstration Rocket Stove project. Rocket stoves are highly efficient wood burning stoves which often store heat in a thermal mass through a venting system which reduces thermal loss. We will be working with the UM Chemistry Department to test emission rates and the City of Missoula Air Quality Department to examine the feasibility of using rocket stoves in Missoula’s air stagnation zone. Winter air quality is a priority for the city and its residents, so we will need to design a stove has under 1 gram of emissions per hour. We will also be working with Sundog Ecovillage who has already constructed a rocket stove for residential use outside of city limits.
