One year. One full academic year at the FLAT. What a journey it’s been. The ups. The downs. The laughter and the tears. The activities and the quiet, the heat and the blizzards. The UM FLAT, in it’s fifth official year, made moves. It was a year of action, of community-building, and of fun. Lots of it. Peep our photo essay below from some of the highlights, to give you an idea of what the FLAT was up to. You build a community of intention, action and support, and you change the world. Simple.
EVST Orientation. New students arrived to the FLAT to meet each other and faculty, to start their new academic journey.
UM FLAT Planning Retreat. The six members of the FLAT met in the Swan Valley for a beautiful weekend of planning/visioning, swimming, hiking, and music playing.
Do-Itcher-Dang-Self. Tons of projects happened in the fall, including making toothpaste, wine bottle bookshelves, and art.
Workdays. The weather was prime for getting things in order around the property (Peter pulling the no-look handsaw. Note the four-fingered glove on left hand)
Fall Fest. Apple cider pressing. Pumpkins. Face paint. Celebrating the seasons in true fashion. So good.
Environmental Documentary Series. Three months. Three Films: Chasing Ice, Bidder 70, Samsara. Faculty facilitated discussion afterwards. Extremely informative stuff.
Pizzapalooza. Our biggest event of the Fall Semester. Overwhelming attendance. Overwhelming pizza flavors.
A Changing of the Guard. Due to old-age and health issues, we had to say goodbye to a few of our chickens, and welcomed in a whole new flock of six.
Wild Mercy Environmental Reading Series. For several weeks, each Thursday night we huddled around the studio’s warm stove with tea and snacks, and listened to some heart-wrenching environmental writing, from both graduate students and established writers.
Spring 2014 Workshop Series. Bike Maintenance, Fermentation, Paper-making, Natural body care product making, hula hooping. Great how-to sessions, and great attendance.
Earth Week BBQ. Crazy successful event, and our biggest fundraiser of the year. Loud music, silent auction, and more food than you could imagine. And way, way too much fun.
An End…and New Beginnings. The year came and went, but not without innumerable acts of progress and creativity, of giving and of loving. The FLAT celebrates you for sharing your time with us, and we celebrate this wonderful place to create a radiant community space for Missoula.
And now, for your moment of zen (or hen?):
