The River’s Best

Heron stood upon her long legs and said “I am the river’s best because I can stand above.”

Bear spread out his sharp claws and said “I am the river’s best because I can fish.”

Beaver twitched her large tail and said “I am the river’s best because I can swim.”

Fish flexed his gills and bubbled “I am the river’s best because I can breathe.”

Woman patted her hammer and said “I am the river’s best because I can dam.”

River heard this but said nothing.

Finally, when water was almost completely vanished and the streambed dry, River whispered, “Best of what?”
